The Pasifika Theatre in Aotearoa course is an exploration of the vibrant and diverse theatrical traditions of Pacific Island communities in New Zealand. This course aims to deepen students' understanding and appreciation of Pasifika cultures, histories, and identities through the lens of theatre, film and performance.
Throughout the course, students will delve into the rich heritage of various Pacific Island nations, including but not limited to Samoa, Tonga, Fiji, Cook Islands, Niue, and Tokelau, among others. They will examine the evolution of Pasifika theatre in New Zealand, from its traditional roots to contemporary expressions. Emphasis will be placed on how Pasifika artists use theatre as a platform for storytelling, cultural preservation, sustainability, wellbeing and healing.
